  3. Hydrological Data Management
  4. WMO Global Hydrometry Support Facility (WMO HydroHub)
Hear the Roar by Zoran Stanko

With innovation and partnership as its driving engines, the recently launched WMO Global Hydrometry Support Facility (WMO HydroHub) strives to support hydrometry on the ground by providing innovative operational solutions to National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and their partners.

Doing so, WMO HydroHub makes the full WMO portfolio of expertise – from science to technology to services – accessible to end-users of hydrological data and services from various economic sectors, as a tailored service. These connections help to increase the base of hydrological data – catalyzed by innovative technologies and approaches – to support good policy- and decision-making in the world. The core of WMO HydroHub is the World Hydrological Cycle Observing System (WHYCOS) program, dedicated to supporting countries and basin organizations in their hydrological monitoring capacity developments: improvement of hydrological observing networks with new or refurbished hydrometeorological stations, promotion of free exchange of data and strengthen data sharing, capacity building and training in the field of hydrology.

WMO HydroHub has the following objectives:

  1. New framework for hydrological monitoring: Build on the WHYCOS experience to develop an efficient, innovative and sustainable framework to support operational systems in hydrometry in the world.
  2. Free and open data sharing: Enhance and sustain global integration of national and regional monitoring systems.
  3. Innovation: Facilitate the operational uptake of innovative technologies by national services.

More information on WMO HydroHub is available here.

Partner: World Meteorological Organization

Target Segment of the Conference: Hydrological Data Management

Relationship to other Conference Segments:

Hydrological measurements are the starting point of the data value chain, from observations to applications and decisions. The WMO HydroHub is thus related to all other initiatives related to water, flood and drought management such as HydroSOS, APFM, IDMP, etc., hence with the other two segments of the Conference.

Geographical coverage:

Global

Connection to the development and delivery of a hydrological service for prosperity:

Through innovative technologies and approaches, WMO HydroHub supports the modernization and improvement of operational hydrology through the collection and dissemination of hydrological data and information, both in real time and as time series, as background for modeling and forecasting, as well as for water resource assessment and hydraulic engineering design (irrigation schemes, water supply, dams, etc.). Thank to these innovative approaches and  benefit-sharing partnerships, the availability of hydrological data is increased, while making operational hydrology more cost-effective and sustainable. This, in turn, supports the provision of hydrological services for information and knowledge in favor of informed decision making.
