A nexus (or inter-sectoral) approach to managing the interlinked resources can enhance water, energy and food security by increasing efficiency, reducing trade-offs, building synergies and improving governance across sectors. Recognizing the related challenges, the Parties to the UNECE Water Convention decided on assessments of water-food-energy-ecosystems nexus to be carried out.
The network includes, on the one hand, several pilot basins where UNECE and partners implement activities (Chu-Talas basin, Dniester basin, Neman river basin, Sava river basin) and, on the other hand, additional basins which primarily work on their adaptation activities themselves in accordance with the agreed decisions of their governing bodies or within the terms of reference of international projects. The practical aim is to improve our capability to make predictions of water resources dynamics to support sustainable societal development in a changing environment. The concept implies a focus on hydrological systems as a changing interface between environment and society, whose dynamics are essential to determine water security, human safety and development, and to set priorities for environmental management.
As an IAHS Working Group, it facilitates the networking of academics and scientists through events, publications, cooperations, and show-windowing. The MOXXI Working Group is innovative as it goes beyond the above mentioned audience by enlarging to and bridging to innovative enterprises and operational services. IFI promotes an integrated approach to flood management to maximize the long-term benefits of floods and to minimize the hardship, loss of life and socio-economic damage to goods and assets that result from floods. It also follows guiding principles such as living with floods, equity for all stakeholders, empowered participation, interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinary, and international and regional cooperation. To achieve this, the initiative focuses on research, training, information networking, promoting good governance and providing technical assistance.
